Static protest

Until last week I had never heard of a ‘static protest’ before. Last Saturday I joined the ‘static counter protest’ against the EDL. This basically involved a large and lively group of static counter protesters east of Aldgate East, an apparently slightly smaller and slightly louder group of static EDL protesters west of Aldgate East, and a massive and very static group of police officers in between us. It felt slightly surreal especially given that one of the main streets running through East London was blocked off for traffic and taken over by not-so-static protestors on a bright sunny Saturday. This picture seems weirdly simplistic for what ultimately is a very complex discussion around banning or not banning, freedom of speech or suppression of extremism, dialogue or deadlock…
